SGD Strongly Condemns Violence in Uzbekistan
|
According to witnesses in eastern Uzbekistan, local protests numbering at least around 4,000 people in the city of Andijan have ended in massive bloodshed. Previous reports had indicated that troops were deploying at the city after demonstrations erupted against the trials of 23 local businessmen accused of "extremism." As per usual practice in a dictatorship, Islam Karimov's government responded brutally, killing at least 200 people.
SGD's condolences go out to those who died in peaceful protests, and implores both the government and protesters to forego further violence. The protesters certainly must respond to the brutality with nonviolent resistance, otherwise they will lose what they aim to work for and cause many deaths in the process.

Nepalese People Demand Democracy
|
In Kathmandu, the capital of the Himalayan country of Nepal, thousands of protesters marched yesterday to demand an end to the dictatorship of the king. The country is currently mired in a civil war between violent Maoist rebels and the autocratic centralization of the monarchy. The protesters are looking for a "third way" between these two unproductive forces, seeking a nonviolent, peaceful democracy for all of the Nepalese people.
Students for Global Democracy currently has a chapter in Kathmandu under the leadership of Jyoti Gartaula at Tribhuvan University. Jyoti has been studying the histories and tactics of past democracy movements, and hopes to play a large part in the organization of the democracy movement in Nepal. With individuals like Jyoti and yesterday's protesters in Nepal, democracy has a good chance of taking hold in the country. We congratulate their peaceful demonstration and wish them the best of luck in their mission. |

Secretary Rice criticizes Lukashenka
|

A few days ago, while in the Baltic nation of Lithuania, US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice harshly criticized the state of affairs in her host country's southeastern neighbor. She also met with several dissidents from Belarus. SGD applauds such official support for the activities of democratic reformers, and hopes that the US government continues to support democracy in Belarus by backing up its rhetoric by fully funding the Belarus Democracy Act - which was passed last fall, but still has not been allocated necessary monies.
